48. John Gilbert

John Gilbert

(1895-1936)

John's film career started in 1915 and he played many bit parts until about 1923 when he began co-starring with top female stars like Mary Pickford and Greta Garbo.

His pictures were very successful and he became one of the top leading men of the 20's. For a time he was Garbo's favorite leading man.

In the early 30's John's career began to decline, more due to Hollywood politics than because of his acting or quality of 'talkies' voice.

This scene is with Leila Hyams and Louis Wolfeim in a scene from "Gentleman's Fate"(1931).

The signature is in a light area and has good contrast.
